Does matcha burn belly fat
No. No food or drink burns fat from a chosen part of the body, and matcha is no exception. Green tea catechins with caffeine do produce small, short-term increases in energy use in trials, usually at extract doses well above a normal serving, and the pooled evidence on weight loss is not clinically important.
Can any food target belly fat
No, and this is the part of the question worth answering first. The body does not draw on fat stores by location on demand, so there is no mechanism by which a drink could act on the abdomen specifically rather than on overall energy balance. Any product marketed as burning belly fat is describing something the human body does not do.
That matters because it makes the rest of the evidence easier to read. The most careful summary is the Cochrane review of green tea preparations for weight loss in overweight and obese adults. Pooling randomised, placebo-controlled trials of around 12 to 13 weeks, it concluded that green tea preparations appear to induce a small, statistically non-significant weight loss, and that because the amount is small it is not likely to be clinically important. It also found no significant effect on maintaining weight loss afterwards.
The metabolic side has a clearer signal, at a small size. A meta-analysis of respiration-chamber studies found that catechin and caffeine mixtures raised 24 hour energy expenditure by about 428 kJ, roughly 5 per cent, with caffeine alone producing a similar rise, and that 24 hour fat oxidation increased only in the catechin and caffeine condition. A 5 per cent shift in daily energy use is measurable in a chamber and easily swamped by ordinary day-to-day variation outside one.
What about the study that did measure abdominal fat
One randomised trial is usually the one being referred to. Over 12 weeks, 107 overweight and obese adults who completed the study drank a beverage containing about 625 mg of catechins a day or a control beverage with matched caffeine, and all of them were asked to do at least 180 minutes a week of moderate exercise including supervised sessions. Total abdominal fat fell significantly further in the catechin group, while the difference in total body weight, 2.2 kg against 1.0 kg, did not reach statistical significance.
Read plainly, that is a trial about a high-dose catechin beverage taken alongside a supervised exercise programme, reporting a difference in one body-composition measure and not in body weight. It is a reason to keep studying catechins. It is not a finding that a drink removes abdominal fat on its own.
How do those doses compare with a cup of matcha
This is where most of the gap between headline and cup opens up. The abdominal fat trial used about 625 mg of catechins a day. For comparison, a 12 week randomised matcha trial delivered about 170 mg of catechins from roughly 2 g of matcha powder. Much of the wider catechin literature runs higher still, with pooled trials using doses from 145 mg up to 3,000 mg a day.
So results obtained with concentrated extracts should not be read as results about a bowl of matcha, and the reverse caution applies too: the European Food Safety Authority has linked green tea supplement doses of 800 mg of EGCG a day or above to a rise in liver enzyme markers, while treating traditionally prepared infusions separately as generally safe at reported intakes. Higher is not automatically better, and it is not automatically harmless either.
What does the matcha-specific evidence say
Almost nothing on this question, which is worth stating plainly. A 2022 critical review of the matcha literature found the cardio-metabolic effects of matcha had only been studied in animals, where matcha alongside a high-fat diet was associated with slower weight gain and improved glucose and lipid measures in those animals. The review's overall position was that the evidence remains limited and conclusions cannot be drawn.
Animal findings of that kind are a reason to run human trials, not a result you can apply to yourself. Until those trials exist, claims that matcha specifically reduces body fat are not supported.

Two things can be said without stretching the evidence. Plain matcha whisked with water contains almost no kilojoules of its own, so where it replaces a sweetened drink the swap changes what is in the glass.
