What does a fair matcha price look like

Across the 25 pure retail products above, the middle half of the market sits between $0.60/g and $1.16/g, with a median of $0.90/g. Below roughly $0.60/g you are mostly looking at second-harvest and culinary-style powder; first-harvest tins sold as ceremonial mostly cost $0.50/g to $1.16/g. Paying more per gram buys leaf quality and freshness, not a bigger drink. A 2 g serve of a $1.20/g ceremonial tin costs about $2.40.

What do supermarkets charge for matcha

Woolworths' listings are in the tables above, currently 10 matcha products from $9.99 to $22.99 a pack. Almost all supermarket matcha is a sweetened or flavoured latte blend rather than pure powder, which is why most of those rows sit in the blends table rather than the pure ranking.

Bulk and wholesale bags

Some brands publicly list 500 g and 1 kg trade bags. They are the cheapest way to buy matcha per gram, but matcha fades once opened. These sizes suit cafes, not home drinkers, so they are ranked separately.

Listed without a stated pack size

These products are priced without a pack weight in their listing, so we record the price but leave them out of the per-gram ranking rather than guess.

How these prices are collected

Prices are read weekly from each seller's own public product listings (the NZ specialist brand stores and the supermarkets that allow it) and recorded with the date checked. This page shows the run of 22 September 2026. The purity column classifies only what each listing itself shows: a product counts as pure matcha where its title or ingredient list evidences 100% powdered tea, as a blend where the listing names added ingredients such as sugar, milk powder or flavouring, and as not stated whenever the listing leaves it ambiguous. We never guess in either direction. Prices, pack sizes and stock change without notice, so treat the numbers as a dated snapshot and the seller's site as the source of truth; the per-gram figures are our arithmetic from the listed price and stated pack size.
