Matcha prices in NZ compared
As at 28 September 2026, pure matcha powder sold in New Zealand in retail sizes runs from about $0.33/g to $3.00/g, and tins the sellers describe as ceremonial grade cluster around $0.80/g. Sweetened latte blends look far cheaper ($0.05/g to $0.23/g) because most of each gram is sugar or milk powder rather than tea, so we rank them separately. Every price below is real, dated and links to the seller.

At about 6 g a week, buy a small 20 to 30 g tin. Opened matcha fades within weeks, so a smaller fresh tin beats a big stale one.

Pure matcha ranked by price per gram
Every retail-size product whose listing shows pure matcha and nothing else, cheapest per gram first (arithmetic, not opinion). This is the like-for-like list: each row is 100% powdered tea, so the per-gram figures compare fairly. The grade repeats only what the seller itself states.

Latte blends and sweetened mixes
These packs list added ingredients such as sugar, milk powder or flavouring alongside the tea, so most of each gram is not matcha at all. That is why a $0.05/g latte tub is not a bargain version of a $1/g ceremonial tin: the two numbers price different things. Blends are ranked here against each other only.

What does a fair matcha price look like
Across the 26 pure retail products above, the middle half of the market sits between $0.64/g and $1.19/g, with a median of $0.94/g. Below roughly $0.64/g you are mostly looking at second-harvest and culinary-style powder; first-harvest tins sold as ceremonial mostly cost $0.50/g to $1.16/g. Paying more per gram buys leaf quality and freshness, not a bigger drink. A 2 g serve of a $1.20/g ceremonial tin costs about $2.40.

What do supermarkets charge for matcha
Woolworths' listings are in the tables above, currently 10 matcha products from $9.99 to $22.99 a pack. Almost all supermarket matcha is a sweetened or flavoured latte blend rather than pure powder, which is why most of those rows sit in the blends list rather than the pure ranking. Woolworths prices were last read successfully on 5 August 2026, so treat them as older than the rest of this page until our next good read.

Bulk and wholesale bags
Some brands publicly list 500 g and 1 kg trade bags. They are the cheapest way to buy matcha per gram, but matcha fades once opened. These sizes suit cafes, not home drinkers, so they are ranked separately.

How these prices are collected
Prices are read weekly from each seller's own public product listings (the NZ specialist brand stores and the supermarkets that allow it) and recorded with the date checked. This page shows the run of 28 September 2026. The purity column classifies only what each listing itself shows: a product counts as pure matcha where its title or ingredient list evidences 100% powdered tea, as a blend where the listing names added ingredients such as sugar, milk powder or flavouring, and as not stated whenever the listing leaves it ambiguous. We never guess in either direction.
